Ancient accounts of daemons didn't distinguish between a metaphorical description of instinctive insight and literal voices or spirits that provided insight. We must conclude that this distinction was unimportant to the ancients then.

Rationality is structured thought, not absence of phantasmagoria. In ancient times, hallucinations were part of structured conscious experience, and in such a way that culture or experts could easily evoke hallucinations. Fragmented society is less rational collectively.
