Fossil has always struck me as under-appreciated relative to git. It's also a complex piece of decentralized software for version control, but it's more programmable than git in key ways. There are probably aspects of fossil that are useful to study for people designing blockchain nodes, decentralized databases, or things like that. The engineer behind fossil is very strong: it's D. Richard Hipp, the same person who wrote sqlite.
