Airlines do a lot of free gate-checking of luggage — sometimes they even beg for it! — whereas they charge a fee if you check your bag in advance. The incentives strike me as weird. I guess it helps them control the supply-demand curve of overhead bin space?

Easy tradeoff: when traveling solo, my bag just breezes through the X-ray. When leaving, I just walk off the plane and to ground transportation. The fewer moving parts there are, the happier I am

The question isn't which of us gets what he/she wants, the question is who pays extra for the privilege.

If the lack of available overhead space is any indication, not very many people are willing to play extra to check bags they could bring on. They should play with the prices and reveal our real preferences, though
