Not sure I’m convinced that #SmartCity #5G is a major driver for #EdgeComputing but may be more convinced by @RittalNA speaker - some interesting use cases suggested although many can use normal cloud (maybe video processing locally)pic.twitter.com/5uNpKhe0pP

Seems to be assuming #5G ubiquity (nope) and that most #SmartCity #IoT use cases are high volume / low latency (also nope) I think there will be *some* need eg for cameras / video, maybe local traffic management That said, city authorities will often want own datacentrespic.twitter.com/uahUktFUsp

Maybe if city built own cellular / LPWAN network (private or neutral host) then it would want a multitenant DC locally, I guess

But *do* agree with @RittalNA #edgecongress that public safety agencies will want own DCs Not sure that’s really #SmartCity though, seems to stretch the vertical definitions a bit

Data traffic from edge sites to big DCs growing faster than DC-DC, if I’m reading this right I’m not sure that translates to Capex or value etc though - wonder if there’s an n^2 factor in there somewhere?pic.twitter.com/TBKjjVnPMQ

Also, if a big edge function is either data filtering (uplink) or CDN (downlink) the obviously the edge-access traffic is going to be higher than edge-core DC

#5G isn’t driving a capex spike for US telcos (Various angles of possible causality here eg softwareisation = lower capex, or shift to OpEx with towercos & managed services)pic.twitter.com/OSgZAMmEVE

The more I listen to edge discussions, the more I think the value is in the *interconnect* between edge DCs & cloud, each other & enterprises... I think it’s less about the actual processing capacity & physical infrastructure

Interesting - Eddie Kilbane if @DataplexIrl just mentioning that a #5G neutral host with a vRAN architecture is looking at DC space - which would presumably mean the various MNOs colocating their DU/CU in that location

... which is *exactly* what I hypothesised in this post a few months ago: https://disruptivewireless.blogspot.com/2019/08/edge-computing-in-network-or-network.html … ie the telcos become *customers* of the edge, rather than providers of it
