The Pentagon has issued a “warning order” to military commanders to begin planning to withdraw US troops to 2,500 (from 4,500) troops in #Afghanistan & 2,500 (from 3,000) in #Iraq by Jan 15, officials said.

An important question to ask is how many private soldiers or "contractors" are staying behind in these countries. My understanding is this is the key to USA continuing its occupation, which it wants to do for geostrategic reasons.

In Afghanistan most contractors are locals. I see that the reduction (to a token force) in Afghanistan is the greatest. Perhaps worth to give that one up as the situation there never was under control.
