Thread about anxiety: 1/14 Some people wonder if anxiety is innate to being autistic. But most autistic people grow up under chronic daily stress. Being an autistic person in society breeds chronic daily stress.

I think that ‘autistic anxiety’ is somewhat different to ‘anxiety’. - a thread. /1

*inhales* okay so, we. Need to have a talk, nondisabled friends. The short version: Accessibility is important, but it isn’t the sum total of disability rights or disability justice. Y’all can’t talk about the rest because you keep bungling access, though.

I keep thinking about people who respond to hearing that I've accepted my illness by wringing their hands and saying "well you have to stay open to the possibility that you could get better!" Even though it's been so freeing to open myself up to the possibility that I might not.

Disabled/chronically ill people shouldn’t have to feel guilty when they can’t leave the house or follow through with plans. It’s okay to maintain your boundaries. In fact, I encourage it! If you repeatedly take that personally, your disabled friends aren’t the problem.

If you're then needing alone time is like needing to breathe. You have to get it, even if people don't like it. Give yourself a break, let yourself recharge, take time out. The alternative might be burnout, and you *do not* want that. Be kind to you.

Imagine the trauma caused by a lifetime of suppressing your own essence and replacing it with a consciously-generated persona that takes 100% of your brain's power to support, just because your natural way of being is not understood or valued by the majority of people.

I have some friends who invite me places & I ask "is it accessible?" & they respond "IDK. You should look it up." I have other friends who invite me places & I ask "is it accessible?" & they respond "I'll check & let you know!" This makes a real difference & means a lot.

The problem right now *is* capitalism. Specifically colonialist capitalism. And I'm not saying ableism will go away if we get rid of that, but it's certainly the main problem in our way right now. We should be working towards a world where no one has to work to deserve life.

I totally get caregiver burnout is a very important topic but we need to discuss it in a way that doesn’t make disabled people feel like they’re a burden.

no one tells you about the doctors who give up on you, about how when you don’t fit their narrow list of symptoms or the first test they try, they no longer try to help. no one tells you how much it hurts to put your body in their hands & have them drop it.

"If you devote tens of [ABA] hours each week to exhaustively and exhaustingly teaching a small child that he gets a reward when he suppresses his own preferences and does exactly what he’s told, you have grievously compromised that child’s nascent sense of autonomy.” 1/2

Society acts like disabled people are a drain on healthcare and the like. But the reality is there is an enormous lack of mental health, reproductive health, etc. support available to us. We need to fight for more healthcare, not less.

Autistic me: Loves - no, REQUIRES - a clean house to function. Adhd me: Cant figure out how to get started cleaning the house, procrastinates for weeks and becomes blind to piles of clutter. Autistic me: Is just as bad at initiating and completing tasks. House: Remains messy.

I’m a black trans girl and I can’t afford to pay for my hormones, groceries, personal products or the bills I have left over after paying my rent for this month. If y’all could help by retweeting this or donating anything I would really appreciate it.

Stop saying Trump has dementia, is mentally ill, is intellectually disabled. Lacking education, empathy, and decency aren't synonymous with disability. Depravity isn't mental illness. When you make these suggestions about Trump, it's clear you hate disabled people.

The appropriate inquiry for a business is not how much a disabled person ‘requires.’ It is what the law ‘requires.’ The law requires public accommodations to be accessible. That includes entrances and bathrooms.
