In addition to expanding the history content taught in schools we, as a society, need to have humility and openly acknowledge that mistakes were made in the past. Sometimes we teach history as “this happened,” and not, “this happened and here’s why it should never happen again.”

We should also approach change from a sensible, pragmatic approach while holding true to the ideas of inclusion, diversity, and the unalienable, basic human rights we all deserve. It is difficult, however, to prevent the latter from becoming muddled due to ingrained partisanship.

A great documentary I saw recently was on Amazon Prime called "The Uncomfortable Truth." Great takeaway -- You aren't responsible for your heritage, but you are responsible for how you respond to it. I thought of those who fly confederate flags or don't get statue issues.
