Lots of food for thought. I've recently been wondering whether causal effects of personality traits are well-defined -- on a conceptual level, this is the most relevant article I've found so far. But I'm wondering what others are thinking about this!pic.twitter.com/O1jgUBXgg8

Now that I read this article again, I find it hard to believe that anyone could adhere to that ill-defined notion of "well-defined intervention". Science seems to be making progress, even in the 21st century, when students are kept on short cultural leashes #Bookofwhy #EpiTweeter

1/2 ((Sigh)) Yes, science keeps making progress, but your insistence on magical thinking for #causalinference is not helping. Yet it takes some nerve on your part to disparage our "hard to believe" attempts to keep causal inference within science. You're the guy who wrote this:pic.twitter.com/cSOrMvcdUx

2/2 But I still hope that one day you'll find the time to prepare a point-by-point reply to the arguments here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27641316  Then we'll be able to have that serious conversation I've been looking forward to. Pearl believes that any causal effect we can name must also exist. To him, the meaning of “the causal effect of A on death” is self-evident. He says we can quantify, say, the causal effect of race or the causal effect of obesity. I don't think we can. https://twitter.com/_MiguelHernan/status/905105718654763008 …

It seems that both of us are looking forward to a serious conversation. I suggest we start by agreeing on what a model is, for I need to make sure you do not really believe that: "Pearl believes that any causal effect we can name must also exist." Do you? #Bookofwhy #Epitweeter

What's wrong with my suggestion to start the conversation? https://twitter.com/_MiguelHernan/status/1073557835336822785 … Take your time and write a scholarly point-by-point response to the arguments in that paper, which is itself a scholarly response to your views. We'll take it from there. Perhaps even on Twitter.
