THREAD We published a poll today on why Californians believe that housing is not affordable in the state. My big takeaway was that too little homebuilding — which is the consensus view among academics and others — fared poorly. Before I try to address some questions, I’ll share details about the poll. Below is the question and 8 responses that were available. USC gave people 2 choices, and allowed for other and undecided. The results are ranked by those who chose a particular option 1st or 2nd. (2/7)pic.twitter.com/zJLppSLFKs

Among the crosstabs, which we didn’t report in the story, there was an interesting finding in the Bay Area. There the highest-ranked answer was the influence of the tech industry with 36% saying it was one of the two top reasons for the state’s housing problems. (3/7)

We then asked about state vs. local control in the context of cities and counties rarely meeting their housing production goals. Below is the question and the full responses from the poll. Margin of sampling error for this and the other question is +/- 3%. (4/7)pic.twitter.com/ykNoHvQvzI

On the question about rent control's ranking being affected because it’s on the ballot now. That’s a possibility given that it could be more front of mind for people now. (5/7)

On the question about adding up environmental regulations, too little homebuilding and restrictive zoning into a broad “barrier to supply” category that ranks highly. I’m open to being persuaded, but even if you do that you’re not getting that close to a consensus. (6/7)

Happy to answer other questions about the poll to the best of my ability. Again, I think the results show there’s a wide gulf between what experts say and the public, which will be hugely challenging for the next governor to meet his very ambitious housing production goals. (7/7)

Is that the consensus view though, and among whom exactly? You continue to ignore analyses by @TenantsTogether @LATenantsUnion @HFA_RenterPower @ourcity and so many more that point to the use of housing as a profit-making commodity as the prime problem

In LA there are literally 4 vacant units for every unhoused person. But keep telling us it's as simple as lack of supply

I’ve been pretty clear that I’m referring to academics and state analysts who point, among other things, to job growth that has far outpaced production. But yeah, it isn’t that simple, especially when it comes to specific aspects of this issue for specific populations.

The huge underlying factor is Prop 13, which incentivizes homeowners to stay long after they should downsize and return family-size houses back to the market. California is unique in this regard, as any poll about California-specific housing issues should acknowledge.

Question: for whom is housing really “unaffordable” as opposed to just more expensive than they’d like? Honest answer is, people with poverty level incomes. These answers are consistent with that

I understand your point. But I would argue the issue is broader than that when low-income wages in San Francisco mean you make $82k a year.https://sf.curbed.com/2018/6/26/17505550/low-income-limit-2018-salary-san-francisco-families-hud …

I’m not sure I understand what this means: “Poll results reflect the percentage of people who chose a particular reason as their first or second option.” Which particular reasons as first or second options is this referring to?

We gave people eight options and— the ones listed in that graphic — and two choices among those options. The percentages shown are those who gave one of those two options as a choice.

Party ID breakouts? Many of these likely h e enormous party breakouts, I feel like you can practically tally em up from this chart alone, but I’d be esp curious re NPP voters.

I’m hesitant to go through crosstabs without the pollster signing off. (The Bay Area tech response was something they pulled out for us.) I believe that USC will be publishing the full numbers soon.

Seems like based on this that’s gonna show maybe half of democrats citing lack of rent control. As rough as this chart is for supply siders, that’s brutal for the Prop 10 crowd.
