Compassion should not be a crime, but under the UK’s ban on assisted dying, it is. An inquiry would enable the views of those most affected to be heard. We call on Justice Secretary to launch a call for evidence as a matter of urgency.

  2. "My views changed. I began to see that while medicine can do remarkable things for most dying people, there is an unfortunate minority who are forced to suffer unimaginable pain and misery." Brilliant, honest writing from Lord Carey.

  3. One year ago, Geoff Whaley ended his life at Dignitas rather than suffer through the final weeks of a cruel disease. Our outdated law robbed him of control over his death. We owe it to Geoff, and to all dying Brits, to change the law.

“But the tectonic plates are shifting. 160,000 doctors belonging to the BMA are to vote on ending their union’s long-standing opposition to assisted dying. It cannot be beyond the wit of man....to devise an abuse-proof system.” 👏👏👏

Please listen to those of us in this situation. Safeguards and choice are possible. Our society can give me and many others facing the same inevitable but unwanted death, the opportunity, control and peace to say that’s it and bow out free from pain, misery and despair.

  7. With 1 Brit travelling to Switzerland for an assisted death every week, it is clear the current law is not working and this issue is not going away. It is vital that medical organisations provide an open and respectful platform for all views to be heard.

  11. This survey is a welcome move which shows maturity and pragmatism. For many years, the BMA’s opposition has been interpreted as most doctors being opposed to assisted dying, despite this claim never being tested against the views of its membership.

This is such brilliant news and a real step forward. We are not lab rats for big pharma, we are human beings. Let US decide when enough is enough not Drs or supposed ethics. Let us be equal to animals in the Right to Die
