The Black Cat (1934) plugging another hole in my need-to-see list. Dig the depravity to which these pre-Code movies allude. stunning production design, direction.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) all in on John Carpenter it seems. Astounding that this was his 2nd movie. The ice cream truck scene is still shocking. A+ squib work.

A couple weeks ago we listened to an Ike & Tina record produced by Phil Spector picked up in a bargain bin somewhere along the line. Maybe bad pressing or mastering but frankly the production was pretty crap. All impact lost in a wash of indistinct SOUND.

The Thing (1982) watched Mouth of Madness a few months ago, so to round out the Apocalypse Trilogy might as well revisit this for the 15th or whatever time. Never gets old. A film both understated and over the top. A perfect movie.

Prince of Darkness (1987) In on honor of John Carpenter’s birthday, new to me. This movie is pure indie Carpenter. Nuts in the best way. Full of ideas, striking imagery. Fantastic practical effects. May be among of my favorites.

The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971) Prototypical British folk horror. Some deft touches among some muddled filmmaking. A bit camp and a bit nasty. 🙏 for making these kinds of semi-obscure movies so available.

Once and forever such a relief when disinterest or ignorance of a musician pays off when it’s revealed they’re kind of a shitbag.

The sea shanty thing is nifty, and people singing together is lovely, but having grown up around folk music let’s just say i don’t have a lot of affection for the form.

Kong: Skull Island (2017) Armageddon being in the Criterion Collection makes perfect sense considering so many big budget action movies use it as a template. This one adds a pinch of Moby Dick. And Pentagon funding. Mostly silly. Computer Kong is cool.

You Were Never Really Here (2017) what could be sensationalist pulp is more elliptical, more art film than thriller. probably a movie that rewards repeat viewings but doesn’t invite them. It’s oblique backstory is outweighed by its grim subject.

In 2007 Iraq veterans tried to march to the Capitol building to protest the war. Riot police instantly arrested anyone who tried to reach just the Capitol steps; about 100 veterans and 200 of their supporters
