    +not mesh dependant +animator can jiggle/push/spot fix +scriptable +game ready/prunable +blends can be added atop +scales with project needs +shape can be updated later +smooth blend between poses -loss of fidelity of final shape Seems like a fair trade off, esp for small projs

    Transitioned to Anim/TD then rigging/skinning after few yrs practicing char animation, long b4 autorig scripts were any good; the workflows partial to Maya's node/graph editor+ MEL/API for custom UI, motionbuilder, some retopo, rest of pipeline i/o wrt LOD of film/game-ready rigs

    Fascinated w/ implementation of a metadata API into vfx-toolchain to optimize collaboration ie Omniverse; several studios' engineers/PipelineTDs recently shared insight into next-gen open USD workflows (ie MPC, Dreamworks, UE4, Nvidia, etc.) @ The SIGGRAPH'19 Pipeline Conference.

    Workarounds 10+yrs ago ~= piping nodes/arrays via MEL/Py to commandPort +/- API lvl scripting to delineate pipeline; 40+ FPS on >LoD/groomed rigs+scene w/ FX in Maya's viewport was unimaginable (as Animator+CharacterTD) even w/ Quadro/CUDA in mix! *thread*

    My experience so far: Most co's that try to build platforms end up evolving into tools for their early user base. Some co's that try to build tools for a specific user base eventually evolve into platforms. To build a platform, start w/tools for a set of users then generalize.

    Some folks are now saying that open source is unsustainable, that they would be happy with source-available licenses, etc. That is what the rat race does to you: it eats you whole. Open source is an insurance policy, a creative outlet and a way of life to aspire for.

    B2B also intrinsically >secretive w/ less incentive for a business to reveal contents of toolchest/workflow/pipeline +/- OSS/frameworks, wrt flip-side of information-economy; in contrast to B2C's built-in viral/fomo/shareability that unlocks >compounding network-fx wrt >userbases

    Studio/publishing landscape is another good example; # of services in 2 seem to correlate w/ ebb+flow of vertical-integration, leveling playing-field; inversely, unicorns have lead investment in early-stage B2B startups/verticals in ecosystem tho uncommon.
