I usually don’t point to anything hosted on Medium, but I let one slip through earlier today. Ugh.

What's your beef with Medium? Was thinking of hosting future posts there, but now I'm wondering if I should question that decision.

I don't like when all of the internet is rolled up under one for-profit website that controls how we are allowed to express ourselves. That's not a web, that's a silo. It smells a lot like Facebook.

Yep. Medium is just another platform ready to mediate your writing to readers, advertisers, and investors. We post our blog posts on there. Not happy about it, but...

What platform would you choose instead?

Ha, yeah. Agreed it’s ideal to self-host. It’s tempting to use Medium because it’s one less thing I have to manage, one less thing I have to design, it looks good, and it provides additional shareability without much additional effort. Which corner is the best corner to cut? :)

I don't mean self-hosting. You can have your own website on your own domain on your own terms, on Wordpress or any number of platforms that give you 100% control the experience.

I decided not to use Medium and ended up using github pages with a custom domain and html pages. Will convert to Jekyll in the near future.
