If browsers use default proxies hosted by some big companies over HTTPS, your ISPs will know even less than DNS over HTTPS. Isn't it a great idea?

Trust is built by providing users with choice and making them feel in control of their experience. This feature has had some rough patches in that regard.

but the vast majority of users don't even know what DNS is. So if you set them to a likely better default than the one they don't know about (their ISP), it's a win in my book.

I agree. But it seemed way harder than it needed to be. Rotate between resolvers, or anything like that seems like it would have quelled at least some of the criticism.
