Chrome should be crafting an entry in the Apps drawer for PWAs. Can you file a bug at http://crbug.com with the steps you take that don't work (specifically the PWA link if possible?)

Thanks! I took a look and the site didn't seem to have a service worker - Chrome requires PWAs to have one. That may be the reason for an APK not being created here.

Ah! Didn't know that... was working fine as PWA in Firefox.

Working out the best way of standardising the definition has been a challenge. :)

Hrm yeah I can imagine. Offline support isn't a use-case for any PWAs I use... except maybe to say "hey, you're offline", which I always already know

Just showing a white screen with text or app skeleton works... Much better than not loading or showing the dinosaur

Not allowing web apps to be on the homescreen because a dino screen might be seen is applying a standard of quality to web apps that native apps don't ever have to meet. I've uninstalled loads of trashfire native apps that get the red carpet treatment.

Exactly - we want web apps to be better. :)

We should be tearing down barriers for web developers, not building them.
Especially when the barriers are applied in unbalanced ways, like requiring an offline page.
Regardless, Browsers' offline pages will probably always be better than what rando developers make

Perhaps, but your earlier example of bad native apps illustrates what happens when the quality bar is too low. Users dislike installing bloated/poor apps and it's a race to the bottom. We have an opportunity to help devs redefine apps and the web.

I can add a SW with an offline page that's just a screenshot of the dino. Now I get to be in the app drawer. Yaayyyyyy. The SW policy is not a guarantee of quality... which means it's just a barrier. It's a weird place to draw a line on getting on the homescreen.
