Sometimes I go out to my balcony and count the new buildings being built that I can see. It’s six right now from my view in Stratford. I’m happy. I’ve only ever seen the opposite in Italy.

My formative years were in Italy in the late 2000s. Where I lived I only saw buildings and homes decaying because people didn’t have enough money to fix them, or businesses were closing. In London, seeing new developments and high-raises makes my heart a bit warmer. It’s lovely.

Yes, is right. You’d never know from most media accounts of contemporary motherhood that—on average—mothers are more satisfied w/ their lives than their childless peers. Esp. so for married mothers, as I noted in :

It seems like every literary or journalistic depiction of motherhood these days is dark af and somehow always elicits ample praise for being brave and truth-telling. It's... bizarre nytimes.com/2023/03/18/boo

Same here. I’ve gotten sick multiple times from various infections, and I used to (almost) never get sick. I feel like I’ve aged twenty years older biologically.

#longcovid is fundmentally a chronic SARS-CoV-2 infection. There is evidence. Covid kills T cells Since getting ill I've had recurring candida infections (confirmed), insect bites turning into cellulitis, recurring tooth infection, repeated colds, shingles... I'm HIV negative.
it’s pretty remarkable how switching from beef to pork/chicken reduces carbon emissions far more than going from pork/chicken to vegetarian

It definitely matches with my experience: my first breakup I was a hot mess because I didn’t really have anybody to help, while the recent one has gone “smoothly” as in the past few years I’ve focused on building super strong support networks.

I read a paper a while ago showing that most men do not have good intimate support networks: few friends, not much family, etc. so they have no people to talk with about their struggles and very little immediate help. So women tend to do much better after breakups.

Hey can you implement replies to specific messages on Twitter DMs? I’ll come and do a week of all-nighters for it for free, that’s how much I care about it

What todo/planning apps do people use these days? I love for time-based reminders, but I’m missing something that lets me organise and plan multi-step projects. Bonus points if the primary interface is via iPhone.

I’m so so so happy to see this. How and have been able to constantly reinvent themselves is nothing short of outstanding.

Big news: I'm thrilled to announce that @ev, co-founder of Twitter and Blogger, and founder of Medium, has invested in @typefully. Still hard to believe how far our small team is going, and couldn't be more excited about this next chapter. typefully.com/announcements/

One thing I can believe messaging apps still haven’t added: local events for a group. Eg I have a climbing group, I would *love* to set up events that the people then can add to their calendars and get updates about.

What's actually great automation is how Uniqlo self-checkouts work (at least here in the UK): you dump all your clothes in the "hole" and the tags get automatically scanned and you literally just need to pay.
Quote Tweet
Why the heck do people call self-checkput kiosks a form of "automation"? It's the same exact technology a cashier uses to scan your item! Nothing's being automated, you're just doing the work for yourself!

Your regular reminder that, no, we are not all doomed, and climate meltdown can be stopped. But it’s up to us, and depends on how fast we can take action to cut emissions. We’ve made some progress in recent years, but still have a long way to go: nature.com/articles/d4158

This is the most amazing graph. On this scale, only the industrial revolution has mattered. The rise and fall of Rome, several different times losing ~10% of population, major shifts in the social order and we just keep humming along in what looks like a flat line until BAM

🗽Looking back 150 years, a careful study finds: “Counties with more historical immigration have higher incomes, less unemployment, less poverty, more education, and higher shares of urban population. We also found that these economic benefits do not have long-run social costs.”

I have a very strong block policy: people that talk about race stuff in inflammatory ways, people that are stupid, and plenty of muted words and combinations (you can select text and mute it from within the text selection). Would recommend it to everybody.

Not only this, but sometimes people will respond by showing that they don’t want to be “warmed up” and that’s how you move on. It’s a super quick feedback cycle that tells you whether or not the person wants to talk (to you).
Quote Tweet
small talk is literally just foreplay guys. you gotta warm people up to interactions. sometimes you can do it *very quickly* but you still *do it*, you don't just jam your conversational penis in immediately, so to speak twitter.com/sashachapin/st…

Mentoring lets you shape lives. For example, if you are an entrepreneur who wants to encourage others, mentor students! This study showed that students who were randomly assigned mentors who were entrepreneurs had between a 30% & 300% greater chance to become founders themselves.

At a certain point we need to ask ourselves if this is really bad for us, we’re not made to remember everything forever — even if it sounds morally appealing.

So many of the old tweets I have saved now point to nothing. On top of that, entire linking services have disappeared: aggregators like Prismatic or Google Reader would send links that went through their own services. All are gone. Now it will never be clear where those went.
