If the image itself contains text (e.g. a logo), use that exact text for the alt text. If the image adds content or value to the page, add descriptive alt text.

Always use alt text on an image element. A screen reader will read out the file name if you don't supply alt text. Use an empty alt="" for decorative images that don't need to be announced.

For a product image, describe key product aspects rather than wordy photographic details.

Use full sentence punctuation in alt text, including full stops and commas. This helps screen readers describe images in a more "human" sounding way, such as pausing appropriately.

Write your alt text, read it out loud to a human, show them the image, and gather feedback on how the alt text compared to what they pictured in their mind.

This is a fantastic, practical guide to writing text alternatives to images ("alt" text). Beyond writing tips, it covers how to use alt text with HTML, Markdown, Shopify, Twitter, Facebook, Medium, and Instagram.

I made the internet a little better today. I not only succeeded in troubleshooting a software problem after upgrading to the latest macOS, but updated the software's wiki to say how to do it and I feel like a wizard.

This. "Animations are less critical for user experience when they are simply time-filling visual stimulations during moments of transition (in fact, it’s these down-time animations that often frustrate participants in usability testing)." by

This is so good! I’ve been reflecting on how white/male/straight privilege has shaped (and continues to shape) my career. One theme I’ve noticed

This still feels like an understatement: "it dawned on me that every person in every team has far more they'd like to do than they can actually do"

May I introduce: . Because I never find the proper tools when I need them I started collecting useful single-purpose online tools that are useful for web devs & I'll keep adding tools. 😊🙈 I share my favorite ones below in a thread. 🧵

6 weeks later I'm still thinking about design as enablers: "Pushing for more user research could be framed as growing curiosity across the team to learn more about the users and the product space." by

A brilliant woman that used to be on my current team (but now manages her own team) told me in more or less words: No one is just going to hand opportunity to you. You need to carve your own path and take what you want. I live by that insight & pass it on all the time. 🙌✨❤️
