I thought we were shocked because FB knew Cambridge Analytica illegally obtained user data, FB didn't audit that it was deleted and then allowed CA to use that data to target ads on their platform.

To be fair, FB did NOT "allow CA to use that data to target ads on their platform." It was explicitly the opposite. FB should have done more than request a doc to certify such data was deleted.
-
True it wasn't explicitly allowed, but it was implicitly as FB let CA continue to use their platform after they knew of the violations. Allowing this on top of not certifying better the deletion of data is likely negligence.
-
From legal point of view, FB was not even implicitly allowing CA to continue possession of said data. Also legally, CA is now saying they did delete the data when they provided the certification and is now inviting a digital forensic analysis of that claim.
-
I'm not saying I believe CA. But that's what it is and I would like to hear more news on the outcome of that analysis.
-
Do you believe FB should have allowed CA to continue to use their platform after they discovered the violation?
-
No. That's on them.

Can’t agree more. I’ve sat with multiple investors multiple times when I was at Klout helping them understand the importance of having an opt-in presence for consumers to gather graph data. I’m more shocked it’s an issue now - 5 years later.

No one is shocked

A lot of people are shocked - including many in tech leadership . They only figured their data leads to targeted ads , and didn’t expect data be sold (including friends’ data).

I think he means the API contracts

Ah ok - got it - my bad
-
But you are right — no one envisioned this much abuse.
-
Oh we're just getting started. Now every Facebook app company now realizes how much data they have and how valuable it is.
