I want a service to suggest arguments, opinions, + points of view from smart people trusted w/in their communities but with whom I am likely to disagree or whose communities I am underexposed to. I don't think I'm alone. More http://www.bricoleur.org/2018/02/a-service-i-want.html … (and cricket pics) 1/2pic.twitter.com/hOw2yHlcIK

I argue that part of the reason no such service exists is that it is hard for algorithms to do. @Facebook, @Google, @Twitter and other AI/ML folks, is it hard to do? Or do you have that algo but people don’t want it? http://www.bricoleur.org/2018/02/a-service-i-want.html … 2/2

During my time at Twitter, I recall discussing this once or twice, but I don't believe it was ever acted on. I believe it should be feasible to build as an extension of current graph recommendation systems. My intuition is that it wouldn't perform well on most current metrics.

Yes, and then the question will be whether the metrics or the algorithm are the problem (or I could just be weird).

Yes, current metrics use engagement and time as proxy for value to user. There could be other measures which might better capture value you are getting at. For example, I've been wondering lately if Twitter could detect if users are in Kahneman System I or System II thinking.

I'm not sure the metrics would be poor even by current standards. You can obviously do this now manually and if you look at, for example, Bill Kristol's account, you can see a pretty healthy number of liberal followers with very different worldviews.

Indeed, he's a good example, though I don't really reply or fav his stuff, I do follow links. As I said in the post, chronological twitter is pretty good for this and hand curation may be the way to go (rather than algo).

I also follow @heritage, and a bunch of other conservative voices for that reason. I've had a tougher time finding people who are more aligned with Trump though @Doranimated was recommended by @benjaminwittes + @mitchellvii gives a good sense of the Trump gestalt.

Bill Kristol is an interesting case. I’m not sure what his base is at this point. Certainly many in the GOP think he is a turncoat.
