      I started off with CIS194 and stack seemed to work no problems, and IntelliJ + Haskell pluging could import my project which was nice for someone used to having an IDE. I can't get the NICTA course to build :(

      Ok that works but I still think it would be nice if the nicta course played nicely with stack. It was great being able to Ctrl-Click on functions in IntelliJ and go straight to the definitions. Flattens the learning curve a bit for people used to Visual Studio/XCode/Intelli J.

      Stack is an impediment to learning. The NICTA course is primarily focused on learning, and so impediments are swiftly discarded.

      I know you hate stack and maybe it's terrible (?) but a lot of beginners (myself included) will be following the suggested route to learning haskell suggested by @bitemyapp (CIS194 then NICTA) and switching toolsets between courses feels like a bigger impediment to learning.

      I don't hate stack. It is an impediment to learning, overall, big picture. I will just keep teaching effectively, discarding all impediments, including stack. Sorry that stack was, and probably will continue to be, an impediment for you.

      I'm not trying to provoke an argument @dibblego and I appreciate all the material you and @bitemyapp put out there. I'm just trying point out some actual impediments I have faced when trying to learn haskell. I got comfortable with one set of tooling, now I have to ditch it.pic.twitter.com/NCXX0z5sH4

      Just use Stack. Tony develops weird aversions and projects them without caring if it improves things for others. It's like hating cilantro and then going around and telling people cilantro causes cancer.

      https://github.com/bitemyapp/fp-course/commit/111f57327eaee869fb452d15099325155e174641 … Well it's not going to work with anything that isn't Nix and doesn't magically know what compiler to use. The above fixes it. I'll PR this so Tony can reject it even though it would strictly help people to use his course.

          I haven't paid you any money so you don't owe me anything. That said, if you are genuinely interested in helping people learn haskell then you need to accept people might want to use familiar tools. Thanks for merging @snoyberg 's pull request.

          If you're in fact a beginner and are genuinely interested in learning it seems odd to me that you'd get hung up on a tooling choice rather than trusting the course instructor's experience regarding which tooling works best. Learning something new implies exploring the unfamiliar!
