I just read this whole thread.. im desperate to be convinced I don't need stack like I don't need spacemacs to use emacs, but after reading all this I still have no idea of any argument against it except feelsies. Some reason and rationale would solve these tensions I am sure.

group a: stack never works for anyone group b: it actually works pretty great for us (this is the extent of the "debate")

Can you please define "doesn't work"? We use it in our company, so it seems to work on my machine, on all of my colleagues machines, on out CI, CD... I am not entirely happy with it, but it's not that "it doesn't work"...

Though there are (much worse) examples for nix too -https://twitter.com/ajnsit/status/992706106232320000 …

Correct. All the build tools are busted. Let's not pretend that stack "makes it easier", when in fact, it does not.

Sure, but just to point out a nuance - Stack error - “can’t find executable happy” Stack solution - “stack install happy” Nix error - “cycle detected in references to [long hash]” Nix solution - ???

Nix takes on a much larger problem.
@pasiphae_goals's example illustrates an instrinsic problem with Stack's design -- one not in either Nix or raw-Cabal. As for the error message, I'll take the headache of general recursion over the headache of YAML.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
