stack doesn't work great if you expect to just use `ghc` or `ghci` on the command line. symlinking the one copied into `~/.stack` isn't obvs

I've had pretty good luck with `stack exec ghc -- ...`.

Stack has three things I find useful for teaching: one tool for everything, a "new" scaffolding, and --file-watch.
@dibblego lobbied against monolithic tools (so ghcid instead of --file-watch), but this to me is a professional Haskell concern, not someone just learning fresh.2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

I prefer Nix for professional Haskell work, even though curation of packages is not perfect. If we're going to say Stack is a mistake for teaching Haskell, I'd really like to know exactly what bad happens to the student.

Stack was such a massive improvement over what came before. If it's a mistake for teaching, that's a very recent fact.

I have respect for
@dibblego. I've come around to his position many times in the past. So it's totally frustrating when he goes off on these anti-Stack bends and I just can't track the argument.2 replies 0 retweets 4 likes -

Stack is "good for teaching" in the same way that python is good for teaching FP, because it has map. I admit; I don't want my students in the bubble of mediocrity, but I am otherwise not making an argument. In fact, I refuse to.

Without arguments, there is no discussion. And it's perfectly fine, it's your choice. But I fail to see your position, since Stack has worked wonderfully for me until now. Probably I'm not an advanced user like you, but it helped me a lot and seems to me a decent foundation.

I am, however, making a slightly better argument that that made for the benefits of stack. As soon as we start getting concrete, it turns to shit, every time, including this time.

Then maybe I've missed that concrete part. My experience has been nothing but positive.
