      No. Let me make a strong claim. 1. I have not used a variable in 15 years. 2. I have not had this class of error in that time. 3. I will never have this class of error for as long as I continue not using variables. Someone used a variable.

      Sure, you could write proofs that passwords don't get logged. That'd be great. That's a way weaker claim than not using variables automatically makes it impossible to accidentally log passwords (it doesn't).

      No, I could (have, long ago) write a proof that this kind of bug cannot co-exist in the absence of variables.

      Dude, I can write a proof by contradiction in a tweet: do { request <- getRequest print request handle request } There's no mutable variables there.

      In case the intended meaning of variables includes named bindings we can even get rid of those and *still* reproduce the bug: getRequest >>= liftM2 (>>) print handle

      Like the earlier example, this expression does not, "passwords written to … before completing the … process" Shall we continue using twitter to discuss subtle, and commonly misunderstood, distinctions? It can get interesting.
