@dibblego I see you are not a fan of Scala. But going through JNI in order to invoke Haskell from a Java application is also a lot of extra work, and there are so many Java applications being extended. Any good approach I am missing?

Well, many (all?) of us who have used Scala extensively, and pushed it to its limits, are not fans. The current solutions to your question include http://eta-lang.org among others. It's not a simple question.

Here is another view. Scala is just a .class file editor. A particularly impractical one. Consider another editor such as /usr/bin/hexedit.
