What programming methods [language] was the self-driving Uber written with? Did that software "work well enough"?

The NTSB report will tell us in good time I’m sure. I think the more interesting questions here have to do with Arizona’s regulatory approach.

Do the Arizona regulations say something like, the software is OK as long as "the programmer did some monkey patching, then wrote some tests and declared that it works most of the time"? Because I would definitely believe that if it were true.

“Over the past two years, Arizona deliberately cultivated a rules-free environment for driverless cars, unlike dozens of other states that have enacted autonomous vehicle regulations over safety, taxes and insurance.” https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/11/11/technology/arizona-tech-industry-favorite-self-driving-hub.html?action=click&module=Intentional&pgtype=Article%5D&referer= …

I struggle to believe that legislation is going to have any useful outcome on software quality. Certainly, it has a detrimental effect in aviation in many diverse contexts.

Disagree. While impossible to know for sure, regulations about how much testing a system must have before use on public roads could have prevented this.

I really think we have to see what the NTSB says before jumping to conclusions though - entirely possible this was sensor failure or some other non-software problem.

I agree. I'm sure you've met the programmer who claims their program "works well enough", overlooking the consequences of this poor discipline. I'm just pointing all my fingers at that programmer :) But in seriousness, yes I agree.
