For me Stack Just Worked on Windows going back to GHC 7.8. Tried hard to stick with Cabal with everything from Haskell Platform to MinGHC. It was misery. Maybe 2.x is different.

I've got `cabal new-build` on Windows working back till GHC 7.4.2 for `ansi-terminal`'s CI; can your Stack do that as well? :-) https://ci.appveyor.com/project/feuerbach/ansi-terminal/build/119 …

What's the likelihood of getting a (possibly more efficient) incremental build directly in Cabal for something like Stack's "--file-watch"?

Discussion 10 years ago: How can we do much better than our current build tools? Discussion today: Stack is better [editor: lol] than cabal. ---- *eye fucking roll ROLL ROLL OUCH \*eye falls out\* ROLY POLY*

I'm not saying much about one tool being better than another. I'm asking about one specific feature that is useful that Cabal doesn't have without coupling with an inotify-app, which likely has overhead.

I know, I'm just lamenting the current state of affairs. Mediocrity today dominates discussion, which is sad. No more progress :( The answer to your question is ghcid.

Or Dante... but people reasonably want a single command with simple command-line arguments for the simple cases. Either Cabal builds it in, or I'd need to make a wrapper script that largely delegates to Cabal and maybe a couple other tools.

Is it really reasonable to forgo composition for the illusion of convenience? There is nothing simple about the monolithic software model.

I don't want one tool to do everything -- just a few common cases. And even Dante and Ghcid have broken compilations from time-to-time and need to be restarted. Possibly Cabal/GHC could do better natively?

When do these "broken compilations" happen? On which of my millions of occasions was there a "broken"? Yes, we can do *much* better. That requires good faith discussion. Good luck with that.
