I'm not saying much about one tool being better than another. I'm asking about one specific feature that is useful that Cabal doesn't have without coupling with an inotify-app, which likely has overhead.
I know, I'm just lamenting the current state of affairs. Mediocrity today dominates discussion, which is sad. No more progress :( The answer to your question is ghcid.

Or Dante... but people reasonably want a single command with simple command-line arguments for the simple cases. Either Cabal builds it in, or I'd need to make a wrapper script that largely delegates to Cabal and maybe a couple other tools.

Is it really reasonable to forgo composition for the illusion of convenience? There is nothing simple about the monolithic software model.
