      My impression (as a Haskeller) was that Scala had a lot of common ground, but the syntax had a lot of Java gunk on it.

      I do remember watching a LC'16 30 min session on the *herculean* efforts taken to take Scala to... almost Haskell Prelude.

      I emphasize "almost". There were still some deficiencies that you'd really feel in anything past "Hello, World" projects.

      1 - I presume that's scala 2 - Good on them for returning a Maybe 3 - Why isn't the 's' in a context of some sort? f s? [s] ?

      It's pure Haskell. There is no useful way to write that in Scala.
