Programmers have recently been convinced that proprietary software such as gitter and slack are good ideas. This is unsurprising.
Twitter demands such a limited vocabulary. What to do about this not-so-good idea?

I don't know for sure.. in the short term there are open source clients which are compatible with slack/Gitter in the long term..

gitter has bugs, preventing my client from working. Defective, proprietary garbage, for which gullible programmers again fell for.
