Pike's choice of words is unfortunate, but the sentiment is sane. Here, "brilliant" is pejorative, i.e., you must be brilliant to use it.
How is casual ageism sane? I know 9 year olds who are more skilled at programming than Rob Pike. Shall I tell him? Tell the world?
