I think we sometimes overlook the positive outcomes that arise from the effort to publicly ridicule silly ideas, like Javascript and Ruby.

@dibblego I've been thinking about this a lot, it seems negatively useful to ignore silly things. People complain about complaining, though!

@puffnfresh That's because they are unfamiliar with the idea of brutal critique and fail to realise that this is exactly the problem.

@dibblego @puffnfresh There are also ways of offering critique that give the recipient an excuse to ignore what is being said.

@d_christiansen @puffnfresh Yes, appeasing fragile egos never helps. I agree, stay focussed, direct and brutal when necessary.

@dibblego @puffnfresh I think we may disagree about what gives people an excuse to ignore criticism - brutality does this in my experience!

@dibblego @puffnfresh And "appeasing fragile egos" can actually make poeple listen, in my experience. It certainly helps with me anyway!
