There's been a bit of an elephant in the room for Aussie FP community organisers the last couple of years. I thought it would be fun to share and compare notes.
The root of the "problem" is that functional programming won! /1
I also think it's ornamental, by projection. "I am going to learn FP because it's cool and that's the point [and ∴ that's why you also use FP]."

It's also a carrot for attracting/keeping hires. Just enough FP to keep them interested, not enough that you'd be in danger of seriously considering it might hold the answers to some of your problems.
