Yes! I see this mental disconnect and it's puzzling and infuriating. If you didn't think FP was for software engineering, then what's the point? I think for some it's purely ornamental.

I also think it's ornamental, by projection. "I am going to learn FP because it's cool and that's the point [and ∴ that's why you also use FP]."
