Design Patterns as evangelized by Boomer programmers are mostly dead though. No tech interview screens for it. When was the last time the “flyweight pattern” came up in a code review? The Gang of Four book isn’t even *readable* ffs. It’s the Atlas Shrugged of tech books.pic.twitter.com/AhNv5VNjeK

On this matter, you and I shall have to disagree. Yes, the original GoF book speaks of patterns that were relevant to the kinds of software intensive systems that were dominant in its time, but the fundamental concept of patterns remain...

How are design patterns not dead, before even alive? * Visitor and ChainR pattern, superseded by algebraic data types and church-scott encoding (1950s) * Flyweight pattern, superseded by compilers (~1980s) * Iterator pattern, superseded by traverse (~2000s) and lens * etc etc

because the lawful abstractions you describe are "design patterns with teeth" :-)

something like that. Perhaps more like the umpires of a game rather than the commentators – their criticism can't be ignored!

Wait a minute. So if past progress cannot be ignored, then why are we discussing design patterns? It's 2020 amirite? I think it's still like sharks.

I don't think it's invalid to call lawful abstractions design patterns, or at least draw attention to similarities. The original design patterns were hand-wavy shapes of code, but they had little reusability or library support. Lawful abstractions have reuse and are testable

whether or not this elevates them out of "design pattern" territory, keeping them in at least provides familiarity for the still significant portion of functional programming novices, for whom that world can appear strange and malign. Familiarity is comforting
