Sometimes i try to say "I'm having trouble reading this code" but end up accidentally saying "I can't read"

No. Seriously, No. There is code that is unnecessarily complex, written in a way that is difficult to test, hard to refactor, full of mutation, and clearly difficult to read, so I would prefer to refactor by writing it in F# or Haskell or another clean, functional language.
-
Yeah, I've been writing Haskell for 20 years. LMK when you encounter the programmer who tells you it s hard to read, but their spaghetti mess is not (hint: neither of you can read it).

Oh, now I see you are a Haskeller, so you are referring to the difficult of reading small snippets of code because of not understanding the abstractions used in that area of code...that's different.

Readable isn't a goal. Java is very readable, you just have to read ten times longer.
-
If we aim for readable, then you want blub, and can never build anything novel that might be unfamiliar at first but improves on the state of the art.
