I would say imperative monad = XT IO for some X ? I.e. the "main monad" of most real world programs, unfortunately.

Can I just point out, before we go any further, that monads have nothing to do with IO, at all? Unless we change the definition of "to do with" to also mean that the reverse function hasa something to do with bananas. What a crazy fantastic day!

This is absolutely not true. I honestly don't know why you are making these claims, other than, "I see beginners make these conceptual errors all the time [though not with such confidence]." Would you like to learn what monad actually means?
