The next time you call someone "toxic" or a "troll", reflect on how casually you did so, with absolute social acceptance, encouragement and impunity. That's what it was like to call someone a faggot or homo (pejoratively) in the 1980s. History repeats.
I think it's much more sinister than "I don't like what you are saying." Imagine if gay people only had to endure, "I don't like what you do in your bedroom."

I don't really see it as sinister, or even intentional. There *are* plenty of people who intend harm, and I think it's understandable to be sensitized to that and become reactive to any hint of it. It does suck that it kills some good faith discussion, better path isn't clear.
