The movement may be short-sighted, but it has also potentially saved lives. When the consequences are potentially fatal, does it matter if some people think it's short-sighted?

I work around it. I do work in areas where risk management where correct calculations have significant practical consequences. I also fail my statistics students who express similar short-sighted calculation ability, since they universally get the incorrect answer.

This isn't a university statistics course. Real people will really die if they get it wrong. Do you work in the public or private sector with your risk management?

I fly aeroplanes on different mission types for example, where there is a self-selecting force for sloppy risk management. It's really great.

If you worked in the public sector, particularly one charged with public safety, you would know that every action done is in line with procedures that follow very specific steps. Someone has already done the risk calculations and this was the best course of action accordingly.

Yes I work in the public sector and I am acutely aware how incompetently this is done. Safety is too important for this short-sightedness, in my operational opinion.

I still have no idea why we are talking about the police. Police are not trained in risk management to any significant extent, if that's what you mean. Calculating risk starts in an undergrad statistics classroom.
