Rich Hickey argued changing the return type of a function from Maybe Int to Int shouldn't be a breaking change. What about from Maybe Int->List Int? Or Int->NonEmptyList Int? Int->(Int, String)? How many of these special cases should be added to a language? This seems arbitrary
If you change from Maybe Int to Identity Int and clients only use >>=, <*>, <$>, pure, etc, then no it shouldn't be a breaking change. Bonus points if proof carried by parametricity. Rich Hickey has been reinventing Functional Programming, poorly, for a very very long time.
