Sadly parting ways with @ChessLifeOnline after a decade. I declined to accept edits to my round 4 World Ch'p report which would downplay responsibility of editors of the Caruana video, downplay the effect of the video on Caruana's chances, and omit the key image from the video.

A principled decision Ian, very admirable. A level of principle not frequently seen in the chess world.

Agreed, an honorable approach. Still, I don't see the big deal, before game 2 it would have given away QGD, now it is a storm in a teacup. And isn't it a fact that writing assignments come with all kinds of strings attached with the editor-in-Lucifer?

@ChessLifeOnline had been a model employer until now and the USCF is of course pro-Caruana. However the lines shown on the video, suggesting Caruana's main Black defences for the match, is in my opinion quite a big deal., and being pro-Caruana should not mean not saying that.1 reply 5 retweets 29 likes -

All due respect Ian, but how do we know for sure that those were intended to be Black’s main defenses for the match? (I didn’t get to see the whole video, only snippets, so I may be missing some important detail). ..

QGD already ventured, Petroff no surprise, so maybe he was planning a Grunfeld surprise, but it’s not like Fabi doesn’t know the info is out there now (if it was planned as a surprise), he can adjust

Knowing that, say, the Petroff is likely already helps cut down and target the Carlsen team's workload. Before a title match, a team needs to cover almost everything, in case of a Gelfand 2012-like surprise. The video did show long shots of a few other middlegame positions.

You wrote: "The video did show long shots of a few other middlegame positions." I noticed at least two tough calculation exercises (one of which I've already reconstructed) but I didn't study every single board sequence. Did you manage to get the positions you're referring to?

I feel in an impossible situation . If I publish the video's positions I am assisting Team Carlsen. If I don't publish I am indirectly assisting Team Caruana. I have decided that non-publication, at least during the match, is more morally defensible. I may be wrong.

You have no obligation, moral or otherwise, to either team, and so should outright dismiss this factor in determining whether to publish or not.
