The problem is simply people who are unpleasant (or even abusive in some cases) to other people (particularly newbs). Potential users then decide not to adopt a technology because these people are using it.

This is not about one medium, it's about people with a history of being unpleasant on the internet in general. In the case I mentioned, I mostly noticed them misbehaving on twitter and irc

FWIW, I have successfully removed all the scum bag Scala programmers (there are a lot) from what I perceive. I still know many Scala programmers. The language is a pile of crap though. Not sure what/why you are asking.
