hey it turns out one of the autonomous car companies has a bunch of vans on the road that literally don't fucking work. who knew (it was me, i knew)

surprise: the computer car slammed on its brakes in response to absolutely nothing. hm that's weird i wonder who could have predicted precisely that, literally exactly that in this specific scenario (it was me, i did)pic.twitter.com/PjvmHZLP8O

who could have predicted that left turns would be incredibly difficult for computers to understand, other than everyone, and especially a shithead like me? because i absolutely said "autonom ous cars will slam on their brakes in the middle of left turns"

i have been saying this verbatim for years because it's actually impossible for a computer to understand whether a left turn is safe. it cannot be done. can not. it is not in the realm of possibility.

in the middle of a left turn, you will suddenly be facing a bunch of cars head-on. it would be irresponsible not to program a failsafe that considers that to be an emergency situation. overriding that failsafe will only result in avoidable accidents.

"sensors" aren't real. they are not. they don't exist. they're fake. that is a star trek idea that we can't make in the real world. i can't communicate this to you any more floridly because there is nothing more to it than "they are not real"pic.twitter.com/kCdFuABLBQ

we are incapable of building a world-seer that is not defeated by a speck of dirt, a drop of water. we cannot do it. it does not exist. that product is not real. everything we have point-samples and scans, and is defeated by a blocked aperture

Replying to @gravislizard
I once nearly crashed a rental car because the lane assist camera saw nonexistent lane markers while I was driving on a narrow back road with no centreline, activated lane-keeping mode without warning, and tried to steer me off the road. Had to actively fight it for control.
