1/ On @odersky’s proposed effect system based on implicit functions vs current Task/IO implementations: I think that requiring an implicit CanIO for all side effectful functions would vastly improve the situation, including the API of Task/IO.pic.twitter.com/HfMJuHEIYT

Except it's completely wrong, and has been explained to him why hundreds of times now, and for several decades. It's rather comical if anything.

Do you have some link to these discussions debating Odersky's viewpoint? I'd like to read more about why people consider these approaches "completely wrong". Thanks!

Not off-hand, mostly old mailing list threads. A couple of people have tried correcting this most recent example. I'm much more interested in helping others (you) learn enough to independently understand for yourself why it is wrong.

Do you have any blog posts, articles, or similar on the topic? I'd really like to learn more. It's not great, as an outsider, to see all these rants and opinions float around Twitter, without much of the details and explanations of each Pont of view.

I am interstate at this moment, for the purpose of teaching a class of 30 programmers, who will all be able to explain why it is wrong by the end of tomorrow. Hopefully you bump into one of them some day. That's the best I can do, sorry.

+1. I’d love to read some counterarguments as well. On a surface the idea behind CanIO doesn’t sound that bad. Especially with a promise to eliminate monadic bindigs, which are generally a performance concern in Scala.
