Fact: Scala could improve a lot without all these community silos
Scalaz: just dump OO and everyone that does OO
Typelevel: it’s all good, Scala 3 is god-given. Kumbaya
Lightbend: go do Haskell if you want to do FP
Me: I guess it’s time to find another language to do OSS

Hey Flavio, I don’t think the Lightbend guys say “go to Haskell if you want to do FP”, but rather “if you want to change the fundamentals of Scala, it’s a lost battle, invest your time in something that aligns with your ideas”.

The typelevel guys do FP in Scala and contribute to the core compiler and they are more than welcome. They suggest changes one by one, talk to the core developers a lot, and iterate in their design without wanting to do hopeless things like removing subtyping from the language.

Being frank and honest about the things that will and will not happen is a virtue. Nobody wants to waste people’s time.

Thanks, Jorge. I guess I exaggerated a bit. It’s interesting that many people perceived the statements by Lightbend that way, though. Maybe the message wasn’t very clear

Misinterpreting outsiders is what creates silos and tribalism, and that's tribalism on tribalism. But the Scalaz tribe does think Scala must change in fundamental ways, those are the changes that Lightbend said no to, so that tribe announced doom.

"announced doom" was lazy, but I stand by the rest — I'm also implying that's not bad faith, unlike https://twitter.com/gclaramunt/status/1018501250059591681 … (which is a tribal response).

It seems also plain to me Scalaz has tribal characters — which is unrelated to the correct opinion on the technical disagreements.
