Haskell on the JVM might be a nice option, but other approaches like starting fresh (Eta lang) or targeting the JVM from GHC seem much more like winners.

I agree. But that aside, Scala is much more like losers. There are also people who think that there are *other* people "using Scala as if it were Haskell", and this creates a degree of amusement in its ignorance :)
