for starters - what is your environment? Which haskell IDE/supporting tools are you using? Are you running nixOS or nix on some different OS?
For learning/teaching, none of the above. At this very moment, I am running nixos. http://github.com/qfpl we use nix.

so no supporting tools with syntax highlighting, renaming support etc? Howcome? I might see the reason in a learning/teaching context, but not in a productive context

My text editor has syntax highlighting by default. I hate it. Syntax is not the structure of the code and highlighting distracts from readability. I don't need any of that. I am using Haskell after all. I type without a right index finger. Race me.
