There is very little room in our current system for the average person to get proactive help. Proactive in this case means: consistent therapy, outpatient treatment, and access to medication.

There are not enough beds in psych wards for everyone that needs them. Our mental health system is reactive. You have to be damn near ready to commit suicide the day you ask for help or you won’t be admitted.

Getting help is easier said than done. I come from a solidly upper-middle class background and literally every woman in my family except me is a nurse. My mom and grandma are psych nurses. I have good insurance. Navigating the system still nearly crushed me.
