In response to this tweet, a lot of ppl have noted frustration with formatting guidelines. I agree that bespoke formatting requirements different from industry standard (e.g. shunn for most sff) can be frustrating but I think there's also sometimes an issue of general tone 1/

sometimes I want to submit to a market but then their submission guidelines have such an aggressive tone? I am not an editor, so I guess I don't really know how often markets deal with rude submitters, but I think there's a balance to sounding strict/pro and also welcoming 1/

If your publication always closes for the same days every year : even easier, we can set a recurring window for that which requires no manual action!

Also, the humans who make the listings do things like celebrate holidays that create a backlog sometimes. Again lead time is helpful because openings/closings can be pre scheduled as long as they are announced ahead of time and we are told about them Just FYI 😁

Reminder: new Submission Grinder listings are generated manually by a person. Esp if you are a publisher/editor keep in mind this is not instantaneous. If you would like it filled in by a certain day, lead time is important.

Loved “The Grammar of City Streets”!

The Grinder today are two lovely tales of linguistics + geography: "Tell Me the Meaning of Bees" with the lexicon on a tapestry, and "The Grammar of City Streets" with navigation as grammar.

Keep in mind that this page can already a little daunting for newcomers, so controls that have no effect on a particular search, or things with unclear meanings will probably add to that, but many long-time users will want to make use of it as soon as it's available.

I don't really like either option, but I do feel like it would be a great enhancement to do this SOMEHOW. Thoughts?

I could have a separate set of saved settings (alliteration ahoy!) for reprints and for originals, making a set of 4 total saved search settings. Would probably need to rearrange some stuff--maybe prompt if reprints or originals first, or have a separate tab for each?

I could add a 2nd Minimum Pay box. i.e. Minimum Pay (Reprints), and Minimum Pay (Originals). This would solve the "how do we save it" problem. But now introduces a complication--only one of those boxes applies depending on the value of another checkbox. Seems like shaky design

But you can also save your search by checking the "Remember these settings" box, so it will auto-fill most of them for you each time the page loads, and there is only one Minimum Pay box, so only one Minimum Pay value saved. (well, one for fic, one for poetry)

Any given search parameters is either looking for markets that accept reprints, or markets that accept originals (some markets will show in both). So, whatever is filled into the Minimum Pay box is what applies to that particular search.

Just as publications that take both reprints and originals tend to pay less for the latter, I also have a lower threshold for what I'm willing to be paid for the latter. i.e. I usually search for 8 cents/word markets, but when searching for reprints, I usually try for 1 c/w

Submission Grinder users: I'm trying to decide how I want something implemented, and I'm curious what you think. Especially now that listings can mark different pay rates for reprints and originals, I would like to be able to save a separate saved search threshold for each.

If you run a publication that sometimes takes submissions, I implore you: leave your submission guidelines up for reference when you are closed. It literally takes less effort to leave them up and then writers can be prepared when you do open.

No one: No one: My brain: You remember "Simple and Clean" by Hikaru Utada from Kingdom Hearts that you havent heard in 20 years? Me:*loops the song all afternoon, belting it out like a karaoke star* (thanks, brain, you're sometimes alright no matter what people say)

Some colloquialisms are just so weird when you think about it. Like "They stole my heart" used as a term of endearment. If someone stole my heart I would be powerfully and briefly upset and then I would be dead.

When someone says "midnight on the 26th" it TECHNICALLY the first second of the day but many people might think you mean 24 hours later.

Particularly, why does 12 am come the hour after 11pm? Why does 12midnight mark the end of a day so the next day starts at the max hour number and then resets? (and yes I realize military time solves a lot of these problems)

Know what's weird? Time. I'm not even talking about the mixed fast/slowness of it or metaphorically, but hows times of day are kept.

Great post, this is something I have been figuring out as well, trying to detect the areas where I feel I need to edit myself and working on that

RT @wintersweet@wandering.shop Happy 10th birthday to The Submission Grinder! It's a real gift to #writers. If you haven't used it and you ever write short fiction, check it out. It lets you search for markets by parameters you set (length, genre, pay, response time, etc.). (1/2)

Reviewing is a skill, one that many people who call themselves reviewers don't have. (And I'd argue part of that lack of skill is due to the way publishing chooses to rely on free marketing from randos, but that's another conversation.) But the work is still necessary.
