  4. After living in Pakistan for two years, I can honestly say that folks here share a great deal in common with Arab Muslims. It's not either/or.

  5. A reminder: these protests emerged after Pakistani authorities arrested Manzoor Pashteen, the leader of a Pashtun rights movement that is strikingly critical of the army, the country's most powerful institution.

  6. On Friday, Pakistan's information minister sought to justify the arrests arguing the protesters were seditious and had acted against the constitution. This is a powerful rebuke to security forces and the government itself.

  7. How could you question someone's patriotism? Pakistan's judicial system asserts its independence, ordering bail for 23 protesters who were held for sedition after a peaceful demonstration in Islamabad that was critical of the military.

On January 18, 1970, ran a full-page ad announcing a day of environmental action. That ad changed everything for the first . 50 years later we need you again to make the biggest mobilization in history. Where will you be?

The government has planned to increase coal based energy production 8 times by 2040. That'll have extreme implications to the air quality in Pakistan and our overall emissions. Most of this investment is Chinese which is trying to offset its emissions from its shores.

  13. Also, the money and agreements are locked in; officials genuinely think environmental damage is a side issue & necessary collatoral damage; and frankly, microgrids are not sexy for government officials. That's my hot take on why this still goes on.

  14. I think the bureaucratic momentum around coal still hasn't slowed down enough - officials know how coal works; they get power plants; they like big sexy projects and ribbon cutting & still think large infrastructure projects are how you fast forward development

  16. How can Pakistan claim to be a climate-action country while building more coal power projects?

  17. a delightfully satirical piece in which one of Jared Kuchner's 25 books that made him an expert on the Mideast may have been “American Dirt” Oh, the trolling you'll find.

  18. Now that we've got the pine trees in, we hope to plant some native trees so the flora and fauna can grow around them. This is all in an empty plot near our home. I should add: we pay people to plant the trees. I'm not out there with a shovel. It's been months of trial and error

  19. But then some of the fruit trees got squashed by a bulldozer scooping up trash so we planted pine trees near the fruit trees so they'd be more clearly seen & grow faster and be less squishable

  20. Afia, that's a really good point. We decided on the fruit trees because we live near a slum where folks cut down trees for fuel, which is their right, so we thought we should try plant trees that wouldn't be cut down so fast

  21. We've been doing some guerilla tree planting around our house in Islamabad. At last count, we got 20 trees planted. I say this to encourage YOU, where ever you are, to be a guerilla planter.
