The cost of conference attendance is a serious problem, especially in terms of inequality.
The fact that schools don’t routinely notify job applicants during their hiring process sucks.
Don’t get me started on journals.
But, and yes, there’s a “but”....

To take another example, academia is actually overall better about providing info to job applicants than the US private sector. Yes, we *should* do better, yet I have heard/seen academics talk about this ias if academia is *worse* & that supposed inferiority require explanation.

Don’t get me started about journals. The whole thing is a house of cards. But academics routinely underestimate the costs associated with putting out a quality journal; open access hasn’t proven to be anything like the panacea some of its advocates claim.

Don’t get me wrong. I want all of these things to be better!!! I’m just noting that we’d benefit from more organizational transparency and from realistic understandings of how the private sector compares on the same activities.

When I've talked to people in other disciplines/fields, I've come away with the impression that political science conference fees seem to be on the lower side.

I think the issue is often less the $ for the services as the degree of progressiveness of the fees. I'd love to see APSA make membership $10/year for grad students and $500/year for people above $200K. At the margin, the fullprofs can afford it.
